Ashkenazi Jews according to Dr. Cochran

Recent June 4th edition of the Economist (www.economist.com) showcased a research result from Dr. Cochran claiming the high intelligence of Ashkenazi Jews may be a result of their persecuted past. Just to be clear, this is my first time hearing of this term. Ashkenazi Jews history begins with the Jewish rebellion against Roman rule in the first century AD. When this was crushed, Jewish refugees fled in all directions. The descendants of those who fled to Europe became known as Ashkenazim. Freud, Einstein and Mahler are all such. I have always been curious about genetic veriations among human kind, especially those on the looks and intelligenc level. If crop can be genetically manepulated to achieve certain purpose, human's should function that way, if done purposefully. Cloning is just an extreme of such theory.
